At this very moment, I'm eating (quite by accident) an approximation of an Acadian dish. I forget the name of the dish, but mine has potatoes, butter, turkey, gravy, spices and is composed of leftovers. The real dish is far greasier.

Print Story I'm not a big fan of England's national sport...

However this made me laugh. It's a long overdue development.

Could it be that for the first time, the English are starting to wake up to the reality that competitive sport is actually about the WINNING, and NOT the taking part?

I certainly hope so. Perhaps this new attitude may extend to everything else that the English do in a half-arsed way, ranging from terrible restaurant service, right up to running the country...

Let's have a bit more complaining, and a bit less of the "stiff upper lip don't make a fuss" approach...

Prop 1A. NO NO NO! If you want to fund something pay for it directly, don't borrow. Also, when was the last time you drove Hwy 5. It's totally uncongested and very efficient. A rail from norcal to socal is the dumbest way to alleviate traffic congestion and greenhouse gasses.

Prop 2. YES. It's a philosophical question. Do you believe animals have a basic right to move freely? And if so, is your pocket book more important than that right? I personally loathe greed. An ethical life may be a little more expensive than an unethical one, but what it comes down to for me is, what is a life worth living?

Print Story "Distant Broadcasts - Broadcasting Locally"

One of the reasons it's fun to spend some time with short-term visitors from outside Japan, is that they come over here still broadcasting on their regular frequencies, and since I used to send/receive on those same (or nearly the same) frequencies myself, I can pick up their broadcasts and see Japan from the outsider's perspective.  The narrow side streets where everything (cars, scooters, bicycles, pedestrians, etc.) shares the same space; the surprise of a first experience on a sardine-run train; etc.

It's time to hunker down. Food budget approaching $20/week. Award-winning Franzia instead of Glenlivet. Spying on neighbors instead of going to the movies. And always watching out for the first signs of an adventure beginning or a chance to be a freelance hero.
